Shree Mangesh Temple

The history of Shri Manguesh Temple is closely connected with the movement of Hindu deities during the Portuguese period in Goa. The deity originally belonged to Kushasthali, now known as Cortalim, on the banks of the Zuari River. After the Portuguese conquest of Salcete in 1543 and the beginning of intensified religi…ous conversions in 1560, devotees associated with the Saraswat community moved the Manguesh Linga to the safer territory of Antruz Mahal, in present-day Ponda. The deity was eventually established at Mangueshi in Priol, where it remains today. The temple was rebuilt and renovated several times. According to the temple's official history, it underwent rebuilding during the Maratha period, another major renovation in 1890, and a further renovation in 1973, when a golden kalasha was placed on top of the tallest dome. The temple therefore represents more than a place of worship—it is also part of the story of how Goa's Hindu communities preserved their religious traditions during a period of major political and religious change.
